#1 The Best Recumbent Bike for Seniors Overall — Schwinn 270i  Recumbent

Schwinn has long been a huge player in the fitness equipment market — and their 270i recumbent  bike just proves it!

This bike will quickly become your new best friend thanks to its versatility and ease of use.  Regardless of your fitness level, the Schwinn 270i will keep you moving forward. Having said that, it is best suited for those of you suffering from joint or muscle pain (specifically back,  knee, or ankle troubles). Why? Because the padded seat and full backrest work with you during your  workout, rather than against you.

The Features:

This bike comes packed with features — all of which we’re sure you’re going to love. Take a look! Lots of Comfort Factors

If you’ve been looking at stationary bikes for a while, you’ll have probably noticed that pretty much all of them “guarantee” comfort. But the truth is that they very rarely deliver on this promise. The Schwinn 270i has changed that outcome!

Along with the wonderfully padded seat, the designers have placed ventilation in the backrest to allow  for airflow. This will ensure you stay feeling fresh (even during the toughest workouts!). Plus, the handlebars, seat, and pedals are adjustable so you never have to overextend your legs or  arms to reach them. That would not be good for achy joints.

29 Pre-Set Exercise Programs

Sometimes, riding a stationary bike is beyond boring. So, to give you something more exciting to  focus on, Schwinn has packed this bike full with 29 programs.

All of these can be customized to suit you and your current fitness journey.

Alongside the programs are the expansive number of resistance levels! Generally, recumbent bikes  come with 8 or 16 levels but this model has a whopping 25! You’ll be as fit as a fiddle in no time at all. Double Monitoring

Whether you want to listen to music, watch a movie, or use your Kindle while you’re exercising,  Schwinn’s dual-track technology lets you do just that. Yup, that half an hour cycle is going to feel like  two minutes!

The Pros

  • It has an incredibly sturdy construction.
  • Comes packed with 29 workout programs and 25 resistance levels.
  • It has a built-in fan to aid cooling.
  • You can connect it to Bluetooth devices to track your progress or watch/listen to media while  cycling.
  • The seat is ergonomically designed to ensure comfort and support during your workout. It  also has a ventilated backrest to help you feel fresh.
  • It will last for years.
  • It is enjoyable to ride.
  • It’s easy to set up and use.
  • Has the ability to store up to 4 user profiles.
  • Promotes smooth pedaling and joint health.
  • It has a USB charging port.
  • Comes with a water bottle holder.

The Cons

  • The backrest cannot be adjusted.
  • Not necessarily big enough for people over 6 feet tall.
  • You can’t adjust the height of the control panel.
  • The grip heart rate monitor isn’t always reliable so it’s best to pair a separate tracker to it if  you’re worried about this feature.

Previously featured on Amazon no longer available. At the time of posting I have found an excellent deal with the Fitness Superstore. I do not have experience with delivery but at the time of posting it was available and showing with good reviews.

#2 The Runner-Up — DKN RB 4i Recumbent Exercise Bike Average Price: £699

Our runner up is the DKN RB 4i recumbent exercise bike model. DKN has an astonishing reputation  for producing nothing but the highest quality fitness equipment. The brand might not be as big as  Schwinn, but it does give it a good run for its money.

This particular bike, the RB 4i, has a variety of features and adjustable aspects that ensure you’ll be  riding pretty (and comfortably).

Once you have set the bike up once, the LCD monitor will store your information until you decide to  take it off. Why does it bother saving your information? Well, your data allows the computer to  recommend the best workout options for you! Consider it your personal trainer. The Features

To be our runner up it has to be packed with a bunch of features, right? Correct! We’ll take a closer  look at them now.

The Features:

32 Resistance Levels and 12 Built-In Workout Programs

There is something for everyone on this bike — regardless of your fitness level. The programs are split into different categories (beginner, advance, and performance). This helps you  narrow down your options to pick only the best, most effective exercise regimes for you. Kinomap and Vescape Connectivity

If you’re not interested in cycling along real-life routes then that’s not a problem. However, for those of  you who are, you’ll surely love this nifty little feature.

The bike connects to each of these apps that take you on a journey across 70,000 miles of courses  (not all in one go, of course). It’s hard to get bored with all of this to keep you occupied! Supreme Comfort

As we said earlier, most bikes just aren’t comfy which makes us begin to dread longer work outs, which results in us no longer  using them, right? DKN certainly caught onto this with their design of the RB 4i model. They have managed to create a seat that is just as comfortable as any office chair. This ensures that  your weight is distributed evenly throughout your joints and makes the muscles work proportionally.  Ultimately, relieving muscular and joint stress.

The Pros

  • It comes with 32 levels of resistance and 12 pre-set workouts to choose from depending on  your fitness level.
  • The seat is padded and completely adjustable.
  • The backrest supports your back fully.
  • There are additional hand rests by the seat so you don’t have to overextend to reach the  others.
  • It measures distance, time spent cycling, the number of calories you’ve burned, speed, and  your heart rate.
  • Connects to the Kinomap application so you can cycle across global trails and courses. The Cons
  • It is more expensive than other models (including the Schwinn).
  • Just like other recumbent bikes, the heart rate monitor is less-than-reliable. Your best option  is to pair a separate tracking monitor to it if you’re bothered by this stat.

The Cons

  • It is more expensive than other models (including the Schwinn).
  • Just like other recumbent bikes, the heart rate monitor is less-than-reliable. Your best option  is to pair a separate tracking monitor to it if you’re bothered by this stat.

Currently unavailable on Amazon, but I have found it on Sports-tech.co.uk. click on the link for further information. I am not affiliated to this company so I am unable to comment on their status or their speed of delivery.

#3 The Best for Larger/Heavier Adults — Exerpeutic 900XL

For those of you who are heavier than others, the Exerpeutic 900XL is the stationary bike for you. There aren’t many bells and whistles on this one since the developers put the main focus into making  it sturdy enough. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not user-friendly because we promise it is! The weight of this bike is approximately 63 pounds which may sound quite light. But, the center of  gravity is fairly low to ensure it stays firmly on the ground, regardless of how hard you’re pedaling.

The Features:

While there aren’t as many features on this one as the other two we’ve discussed here, we still want  to mention a few bits and pieces.

8 Resistance Levels

The 8 resistance levels give you a certain degree of customization. Admittedly, not as much as the  other two recumbent bikes but it will still help you along the path to fitness.

Overall Design

The developers have paid true attention to the lack of mobility some people may have. How? By  providing a “step-through” mount and dismount style.

Heart Rate Sensor

As far as heart rate sensors on exercise bikes go, this is a very good one. Still, we’d recommend  purchasing a separate one if you are wanting to accurately track your progress. The Pros

  • It has a huge weight capacity — withstands as much as 300 lbs.
  • The seat is completely adjustable.
  • It’s fantastic for those who are up to 6 feet 7 inches tall.
  • It’s easy to transport thanks to the wheels on the base.
  • The operation is quiet so it won’t disturb your neighbors.
  • The seat is padded to aid comfort.
  • It comes with 8 levels of resistance.

The Cons

  • It is relatively difficult to put together (especially when compared to the other two recumbent  bikes on this list).
  • It isn’t as sturdy as more expensive models. However, this might not be such a bad thing if  you don’t want to shell out over £1,000!

What more could you ask for? There’s a whole world of safe indoor cycling fun awaiting you! Psst: If you’re just starting on your fitness journey and you’re worried about overexerting yourself.  Have a little chat with your GP first so they can give you advice as to the right workout regime for you.
